Wedding Practice

Huh?

Yes indeed my friends, I am in a wedding next weekend as Lulu and Diego's trainer.  These two Frenchies were my first two clients ever!  Last year I agreed to help them with their wedding, as they wanted the dogs to walk down the aisle and pose with them for pictures.  Well, the big day is almost here- we needed to practice!

Benny and Lily, meet your lifetwins!

Today we met at the location of the wedding, a beautiful manor that is surrounded by gardens.  Lulu and Diego already know how to wait in one spot and focus on command, but can they do it with a camera in their face, food on the tables, and guests all around?

Lucky for us, there was a plant sale and a crew setting up for an event, so we had lots of people around doing weird stuff.  I am so excited to do my first dog wedding, I'll be sure to post more about it after next weekend.

Can you tell who needed more practice?

In other news, I get to spend the weekend with my least favorite dog ever Lex.  He is a dachshund.  A biting dachshund.

His owners dropped him off at 6am Friday.  At around 6:30, while walking him around the house on leash, he tried to mark a dog bed.  In my half comatose state, I uh-uh'd him with my hand a little too close to his mouth.

Right after washing the bite

Can you believe that in 6 years of working with dogs, this is my first puncture?  Lex bit and held, so I used my other hand to wedge his lip into his teeth, causing him to let go but not give up.  This is why dachshunds are one breed I'm not overly fond of.  After almost 5 minutes of holding him down, wrapping him in a blanket, and trying to calm him down, he was still trying to bite me.

Long story a little less long, my hand is swollen like a balloon animal and infected, even though I washed it the right way and went on antibiotics.  My doctor said the bite probably included a tendon, which almost always get infected.  So I bought myself ice cream.  Then took the dogs for a walk.

The moral of the story is don't let dachshunds stay at the house.  At least not without protective gear.

  2. We have one of your least favorite dogs down the street that terrorizes Titan every single time we walk by. They are also one of my least favorite dogs. I'm much more comfortable with my pit bull!

  5. Those frenchies are too cute for words! I adore them. They'll be so cute in the wedding. You hand looks wretched though. What a cranky little daschund. What is his problem?

  6. Not cool, wiener dog. Not cool.

But the wedding sounds fun and challenging for you as a trainer! Actually, a co-worker of mine was just asked if she would handle one of our client's dogs as she is getting married in June. She would basically just come for like an hour and help with pictures, etc. I know that if I ever decide to get married, my dog(s) would be involved.

  7. Holy evil wiener dog! Hope your hand feels better soon. I think I'd carry a squirt bottle of water to nuke him with whenever he decided to squirt something inappropriate. What a little jerk.

The wedding sounds fun, I'm glad the bride and groom are having you work with the dogs ahead of time. Hope the pictures are great!

  8. That's awesome that the doggies get to be in a wedding! Sorry you were bitten. Dad has been bitten by dogs a number of times (he's a UPS man) but the small dog bites are usually the worst. Hope your hand gets better soon! (love the butt floss comment! that made us LOL)

  9. My little sis was bit in the face by a dachshund when she was younger. I try my best not to make negative comments about any breed as a whole, but I am not a huge fan of them in general. That bite looks PAINFUL!

On a side note, that wedding location is BEAUTIFUL!

  11. Ugh, so sorry about the bite! Dachshunds are one of my least favorites too... this just confirms another reason why. I know I shouldn't discriminate against a whole breed, but I've never met a dachshund I liked...

Good luck with training the Frenchies for the wedding! They look like apt pupils.

  13. Ugh, I'm sorry :( I foster dachshunds, and even *I* will admit that they're *cough* a bit ... feisty? More so than other dogs. I hope your hand is healing up nicely.

Are you going to accept him as a client for training? If so, I'd be interested to know how he shapes up.
